EnergyLok Check

EnergyLok Check

EnergyLok Check is a detailed study of computer room environmental conditions, capacities, loads, redundancy and management. This process examines the data center infrastructure to benchmark existing functionality and identify the ideal “Cooling Investment” based on a practical methodology for managing an efficient cooling environment.

Dilemma

Data center managers and engineering support often have limited time and/or working knowledge of investigating and measuring existing conditions in order to evaluate the appropriate solutions, document the impact on cap ex and op ex and present an implementation plan with return on investment to IT and financial leadership.

Methodology

EnergyLok engineers, in concert with data center management, develop a plan focused on the optimization of the "Cooling Investment". This comprehensive plan utilizes our onsite EnergyLok engineers to review the cooling, airflow, critical power and general room conditions. Infrared thermography is utilized to document the thermal load of IT and cooling equipment. The detailed results including comprehensive report, detailed data analysis and recommendations for immediate implementation are reviewed onsite with an EnergyLok engineer. The implementation plan focuses on solving the existing and predicted issues in the most cost effective manner. The recommended solutions include an explanation and understanding of the science behind the best practices and a measured approach to practical applications within the cost constraints of the data center.

Results

The EnergyLok Check is a comprehensive analysis that includes key data center conditions to identify "Cooling Investment". Expected deliverables:

• Cooling Conditions: Survey results of the existing cooling conditions, including IT equipment air intake temperatures, measurement of room temperatures and humidification patterns, analysis of room recirculation patterns, and benchmarking of cooling unit performance against manufacturer specifications. Includes estimated efficiency improvement, release of constrained capacity and incremental cost savings.

• Airflow Conditions: Analysis of current airflow conditions, including perforated tile layout, under-floor airflow, perimeter breaches, and raised-floor bypass area and volume.

• Critical Power Conditions: An examination of current power conditions comparing power consumption against system capacity, establishes power distribution limits, quantifies rack utilization and identifies constrained as well as redundant capacity in each sub-system.

• General Room Conditions: An overall assessment that surveys the make up air system, equipment layout, cabling management and room contamination.

• Infrared (IR) Thermography of IT and Cooling Equipment: IR thermography is used to identify and document thermal load and cooling airflow patterns. The images are used to help optimize the cooling infrastructure and present the findings.

• Fixed Price Quote: An understandable quote (including a calculated investment and return on investment) for the implementation of EnergyLok Check recommendations by an EnergyLok Tune remediation and modernization program. This optimization plan drives the application of best practices such as cold and hot aisle containment, ceiling plenum return and free cooling.
