With 2022 officially over, we wanted to take a look back at our top stories from The Upsite Blog. It was a busy year with many things to talk about—everything from discussing how the metaverse will live in your data center to examining the benefits and challenges of hot aisle containment vs. cold aisle containment. We shared a lot of content that we hope you not only enjoyed reading, but also found useful. Here are the top 10 articles that data center professionals like you shared the most in 2022:
1. How the Metaverse Will Live in Your Data Center
Emerging concepts around the metaverse all generally revolve around the Fourth Industrial Revolution that we are actively experiencing. Let’s briefly define what that means. According to the World Economic Forum, the speed of current breakthroughs has no historical precedent. Compared with previous industrial revolutions, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is evolving exponentially rather than linear.
2. Perforated Tile Placement: Why the Right Location Matters
It’s common knowledge that perforated tiles are a vital aspect of the cooling process in any raised floor data center. After all, that is how you deliver the supply air to the cold aisle and ultimately to the inlets of the IT equipment. Yet, managing the placement of those perforated tiles is a strategic component of airflow management that is often overlooked. For example, of 45 sites we reviewed worldwide, only 7.5% had properly placed all of their perforated tiles.

Over the past few years, cabinet manufacturers have reported a growing percentage of their sales are for white server cabinets. In addition, it’s become commonplace to see white equipment at conference exhibit halls, where not too long ago the prime variations tended to be flat black versus rippled black versus glossy black, with the occasional novelty color reflecting a marketing ploy to exploit a particularly high profile or high buzz end-user customer endorsement.

A very valuable way to understand data center cooling optimization is to look at the four delta T’s (ΔT’s) in the computer room. Two of these ΔT’s are more commonly known, while the other two are less commonly known. Most people will be focused on one or the other of the more commonly known ΔT’s – IT folks will be focused on the temperature change as air moves through the IT equipment, while the mechanical folks will be focused on the temperature change as air moves through the cooling units.

Data centers on slab floors and data centers on raised floors both have their proponents and opponents and the pros and cons have been debated on stages at industry conferences, at site-specific sales pitches and across happy hour bar stools. Where you fall in this debate may often reflect what product or system you are selling, whether your data center is a profit center or overhead, whether you’re big enough to have on-staff design expertise or small enough to rely on third party design expertise, or whether site design is controlled by IT or facilities.

Data center containment has gone mainstream over the past decade, which has led to widespread implementation and adoption by many sites. In fact, according to a recent survey by the Uptime Institute, 80% of sites have implemented either hot or cold aisle containment. While the survey represented mostly larger facilities, many medium and small facilities have either implemented or are considering some form of containment.
9. IT Equipment Delta T and Flow Rate: How They Impact Your Data Center
As we recently discussed, reducing bypass airflow is key to increasing cooling capacity and reducing operating costs. Airflow management improvements allow for the reduction of conditioned airflow rates from cooling units, either by reducing fan speeds or by turning units off. This reduces the amount of bypass airflow in the room by making the delivered flow rate of conditioned air closer to the flow rate required by IT equipment.

Data center cooling has been a constant topic of discussion at industry events and on industry publications, much like this one, for some time now. Much of these discussions are typically centered around optimizing the cooling infrastructure to maximize efficiency and ultimately reduce costs related to cooling.
